One to One Student Laptops

Canadian Academy students from grades 5 to 12 use personal laptops while at school. One to one student laptops in the classroom allow for increased productivity and convenience for those students carrying this essential learning tool. They are a necessity in preparing students for the demands of the 21^st century, where our ability to operate in digitally connected networks is paramount.

Grade 5

Each student in grade 5 will have access to a school owned laptop for their use throughout the school year. It is recommended that Grade 5 students be allowed to take the laptop home when classwork makes it appropriate, but this will be at the discretion of parents. Permission to use the laptop at school and at home is subject to the signing of the Elementary School One to One Laptop Usage Agreement.

Grades 6 to 12

For grades 6 to 12  families will provide their own laptop capable of handling course requirements. This is to be brought to school by students, fully charged each day.  Please see the list below for the minimum hardware requirements.

Maintenance of laptops is not provided by CA, except help will be given to connect laptops to the CA network. A replacement computer (Apple MacBook) can be loaned if a student has a computer breakdown. Families are also responsible for providing the appropriate software listed below.

Hardware Requirements
Historically Canadian Academy is primarily a Mac based school. While support for Windows computers is available, Windows users may need to be more independent and tech savvy in classrooms, as teachers are less experienced with the platform.

• MacBook, MacBook Air or MacBook Pro, from 2011 or later. 
• Ultrabook or better, from 2011 or later. The laptop must have English language Windows 7 or Windows 8. Computer should have an integrated webcam and microphone
• Wireless networking IEEE 802.11g/n compatible

Software

• A better alternative to Windows Movie Maker is Adobe Premier Elements – a double pack with Photoshop Elements is the cheapest way to buy these together.
• All software is free except for Adobe Photoshop Elements and Premier Elements. Premier Elements is not available for Mac, but iMovie included for free with the Mac is a good alternative.
• If you are taking courses such as Art or IB Film there may be specialized software and hardware requirements beyond the basic productivity suite.  Please consult with the teachers of these courses. 

Purchasing a laptop through Canadian Academy

Families new to Canadian Academy, as well as fifth grade students moving into the Middle School, can optionally purchase a laptop assisted by Canadian Academy. Families of fifth graders can order their laptop through the billing form in the parent portal, and it must be paid for in advance to ensure delivery. 

Laptops purchased through the school are not maintained or repaired by the school.  This is offered as a service to help families choose and purchase a laptop, and the laptops are the property and responsibility of the families purchasing them.

AppleCare Protection Plan, Apple’s extended three-year warranty, can be purchased separately for ¥19,800. Further details on these computers and AppleCare can be found on the online Apple Store.

カネディアン・アカデミィでは、5年生から12年生までの生徒は各自一台のラップトップ（ノートパソコン）が必要になります。

5年生

5年生の生徒は学校の所有となるラップトップを各自が一年間使用するものとして支給されます。生徒がコンピュータを自宅に持ち帰ることを推奨しますが、その決定は保護者に委ねられ、そのためには Elementary School One to One Laptop Usage Agreement に署名をいただく必要があります。

6年生から12年生まで

6年生から12年生は授業に必要な条件を満たしたラップトップを各自が購入し準備します。各自毎日登校前にバッテリーを完全に充電しておく必要があります。最低限必要なハードウェアについては下記のリストを参照下さい。ネットワークへの接続を手伝う以外にはラップトップの保守、修理のサービスは学校では行いません。

• MacBook, MacBook Air あるいは MacBook Pro （2011年モデル以降）
• Windows 7 または Windows 8 のウルトラブックあるいは一般のノートパソコン（2011年モデル以降、ウェブカメラとマイク内蔵のこと）
• IEEE802.11g/n対応の無線LANカード内蔵のこと
• 不明の点があれば Murray Smith にメールで連絡ください

 ソフトウェア

• 一覧表のソフトをすべて収録したUSBフラッシュメモリをテック・サポート・センターにおいて廉価にて販売します。
• Adobe Photoshop Elements および Premier Elements 以外のソフトウェアは無料です。
• Windows Movie Maker よりも Adobe Premier Elements を推奨。Premier Elements は Mac に非対応ですが、Mac に標準搭載の iMovie でも十分です。
• Art や IB Film 等のコースを選択する場合は本表のソフトウェア以外にも専門的なものが必要かもしれません。受け持ちの教師にお尋ね下さい。 

学校を通してラップトップを購入

新しく転入する生徒、あるいは新たに中学生になる前の5年生はラップトップの購入をお手伝いします。5年生のご家庭は学校ウェブサイトの parent portal の fees assessment フォームからラップトップをご注文いただけます。費用はまとめて学校から請求されます。学校はラップトップの選定と購入を支援するのみで、購入したラップトップの保守管理は行いません。ラップトップは各家庭の所有となり保守管理は各家庭の責任となります。
