CA’s In-house Google Educator for Kansai Gives Us More Insight into Tech

CA’s In-house Google Educator for Kansai Gives Us More Insight into Tech

Last weekend, CA collaborated with Google, Figma, Goodnotes and local Google Educator Groups (GEGs) to host two pivotal events aimed at enhancing the role of technology in education:

  • GEG Leader Meet-Up

  • GEG Kansai Weekend.

These events brought together educators from across Japan to discuss innovative ways to use technology in schools and in our communities.

And who other than Kae Shigeta, our Elementary School ICT Integration Specialist, to have organized such a remarkable event. Kae is also a Google for Education Certified Innovator/Coach/Trainer and the GEG (Google Educator Groups) Osaka City Leader.

Educators attending the event were particularly impressed with the flexibility of Canadian Academy’s learning spaces, which are designed to foster collaboration and empower students. Some even compared the experience to visiting Google’s Tokyo office!

One of the key takeaways was the rich diversity of perspectives shared by attendees. With educators from various backgrounds—public, private, and international schools—the discussions were dynamic and broad-reaching. Even though it was a diverse group, it highlighted that many educators face similar challenges and fears due to the rapid integration of technology. This diversity led to seeking solutions to alleviate the burdens and have deeper conversations on how best to enhance student learning.

“Japan’s GIGA initiative has made great strides in distributing devices to students in public and private schools,” Kae noted. “However, many schools struggle with tech integration due to a lack of EdTech specialists on staff. Teachers need support in strategically implementing technology, and the event gave us an opportunity to explore how we can build stronger connections across schools (local and international) to bridge these gaps.”

We sat down with Kae to get some thoughts and tips

Were there any specific educational technologies discussed that parents should know are shaping the future of learning?

  • Parents need to understand the rapid transformation of education systems driven by artificial intelligence (AI). Tools like Gemini (by Google), are leading this revolution. AI's capabilities allow for personalized learning, intelligent tutoring, and automated administrative tasks, freeing up teachers to focus on creative and impactful activities. It's important to note that most AI tools, have age restrictions (13+), and students need guidance when using them.

Did any Google for Education tools stand out during the event as particularly effective for helping students engage more in the classroom?

  • Gemini (NotebookLM),

    •  a powerful AI tool, enhances student engagement by providing personalized assistance and interactive learning experiences.

    • bolsters the security of Google tools and information systems in educational institutions, ensuring the protection of sensitive data and safeguarding against potential threats

    • became available in Japanese.

“On a personal note, I incorporate both Gemini and NotebookLM into my daily routine, using them for personal tasks and administrative duties at school. During a summer vacation in Hawaii, I collaborated with AI to create a new song each day! While I strive for regular digital detoxification, I recognize the occasional utility of certain technological tools in enhancing my overall well-being.”

Sometimes there is a fear that students are spending too much time with technology, that there could be misuse of technology or that too much tech can replace learning. What is your view on this?

  • While concerns are valid, when leveraged wisely and purposefully, technology can significantly enhance the learning experience. It is crucial to maintain a balance where technology complements and enriches essential teaching and learning practices, rather than replacing them altogether.

  • Since joining as the ES ICT Integration Specialist in 2010, my responsibilities have undergone a substantial transformation. In the beginning, safeguarding students' appropriate technology use while maximizing technology's potential within the school environment was my focus. However, my current role has shifted towards integrating technology into artistic and design processes within our Makerspace. This shift aims to nurture creativity, promote critical thinking, and enhance the educational experience of our students. As a technology integration specialist, my role is to ensure that the incorporation of technology in the school's curriculum is thoughtfully planned and aligned across grade levels. In certain instances, I might suggest to teachers that refraining from using technology could be more beneficial for student learning and engagement.

For parents who may not be familiar with educational technology, how can they support their children in using these tools at home?

  • Explore the educational technology tools your children use. This will give you insights into their purpose and how they can enhance your child's learning journey. Last year, I held parent learning technology workshops on generative AI tools like Adobe Express and 3D Design. I aim to introduce more tools and resources this year. So, please come to my workshops!

  • Set clear guidelines for technology use at home, including time limits and appropriate content. Many young learners understand that technology is not a magical tool. We should help them maintain media balance from an early age by serving as role models.

As CA commits to  leading the way in innovation in tech education, we will be offering technology workshops for parents, providing hands-on opportunities to explore tools used in school. These workshops will empower parents to guide their children in using technology responsibly and effectively, ensuring our entire community is prepared to navigate the ever-evolving digital landscape. Don’t forget to look out for announcements of upcoming Tech workshops that will be on offer and feel free to reach out to any of our tech experts for pressing questions!
