Extended Learning Opportunities

Once every nine days, our students explore a concept that is challenging, creative, and often requires collaboration. Our Extended Learning Opportunities (ELO) demonstrate that learning is meaningful, fun, inspirational yet a complex and challenging human endeavor.

At the start of the school year, our elementary school focuses on community building as well as the understanding of the child's role at Canadian Academy-- to be an active and engaged learner. Throughout the year, elementary school ELOs might focus on nature and its changes, being an active member of our Rokko Island community, or health and well-being. Individual grade levels might focus on robotics or coding, passion projects, or inviting guest speakers into the classroom to share their enthusiasm on a given topic.

Today in ELO grade 6-10, our students explored how our CA core values, IB Learner Profile and Approaches to Learning are the core of how we learn in the Middle Years Programme at CA.

At the end of the session, all students selected one ATL ( from Collaboration, Independence, Initiative and Organization) which they will continue to focus on developing this semester.

Our secondary ELO consists of two parts.

  • Part 1: Whole MYP ELOs, where grades 6-10 work on topics like Gender Equality, Inclusion, Service and Sustainable Development Goals, and

  • Part 2: Electives, where students will select a short course that they will study over 6 ELO sessions.

Our ELO program is one example of what makes Canadian Academy unique-- a time where students take even greater control of their learning.
