How do you feel about transitions in your life? Are you filled with excitement, or do you tend to feel nervous? As we approach the end of the academic year, it’s important to reflect on how we navigate these changes and prepare for the year ahead.
This month, we held parent workshops to discuss transitions from G5 (Elementary School) to G6 (Middle School) and from KB (Kindergarten) to G1 (Elementary School). Parents gathered to share their excitement and concerns, while our teachers offered valuable tips for making these transitions as smooth as possible. Here are the points covered during the sessions.
Differences between Elementary and Middle School
The participants discussed the differences that would have an impact on the students’ lives, including friendships and social dynamics, learning content, afterschool activities, and grading. Some parents who have older children in secondary school shared their experiences regarding these changes so that the other participants could have a clearer picture of them.
Counselor’s Support in Middle School
Our middle school counselor plays a crucial role in supporting students. The counselor's office is conveniently located on the same floor as the middle school classrooms, allowing students to drop by whenever needed. Counseling sessions can also be arranged via email.
The Use of Technology in Middle School
Middle school students use their personal laptops for classwork as directed by their teachers. It’s recommended that parents and students establish a routine to manage the device together, fostering responsibility and ensuring effective use of technology.
Transition Activities for KB Students
To ease the transition from kindergarten to elementary school, G1 students welcomed KB students to their classrooms and introduced their typical day. KB students also toured the elementary classrooms, cafeteria, main library, playground, and Maker Space, familiarizing themselves with the new environments they will use.
Supporting Children in the Transition from Kindergarten to Elementary School
Encouraging independence is key. Parents can support their children by allowing them to make choices and reflect on them, and by teaching them to take on responsibilities. These steps help children develop confidence and adaptability.
During the KB-G1 transition session, parents enjoyed a mini school tour, giving them a firsthand look at the facilities their children will use.
Transitions can be challenging, but with the right support and preparation, they can also be exciting opportunities for growth. We hope the information shared in the parent workshops helps families approach transitions with confidence and positivity.
In the coming weeks, parent workshops will be held about the transition from G8 (Middle School) to G9 (High School) on May 21st, and transitions to 2024-2025 in general on May 23rd.
