CA Finance 105: Bus Service and Changes for 2018-19
Posted 05/16/2018 16:12

While many families choose to bring their children to school by automobile and others use public transportation, Canadian Academy offers bus services to its families as well. The current CA service, in operation for many years, includes two routes with one heading to Ashiya (Ashiya route) and the other to Sannomiya (Rokko route). These routes supplement private bus services offered by Maeda and Shioya.

The school is introducing a few changes in its offering for 2018-19 including:

  • A slight price reduction for round-trip commitments versus one-way
  • A more significant price reduction (appx 25%) for 2nd and 3rd children in the same family
  • An additional pickup point at JR Ashiya
  • Online payments by credit card (bank transfer remains an option)
  • Online purchase of single-ride tickets and discounted books of 10

The school is replacing the current large 64-passenter larger bus with a new, smaller vehicle which will go into service in August. This smaller bus will allow the driver to navigate some of the narrow streets in Kobe – a feat that is difficult with the current vehicle – which may increase our flexibility when revising routes as our families move around.

We reviewed last year's bus survey carefully in making these changes. We also evaluated the potential for an after-school activities service but lack the necessary staffing to make it feasible this year. Finally, we reviewed our routes against a map of family addresses but did not find any improvements for next year.

That said, we plan to conduct a more thorough evaluation of where CA families live as well as road sizes and congestion in an investigation of alternate routes. We also welcome your feedback (

We hope you are finding these columns helpful in understanding the school's finance and operations.  If you've comments, questions, or suggestions for future subjects please send them to  We look forward to hearing from you.
