Outdoor Education

The Canadian Academy Outdoor Education Program stimulates proactive engagement, confidence, teamwork and respect for others. By providing an environment for challenging but safe risk-taking, students are enabled to discover hidden strengths and develop the leadership skills and capabilities to approach unfamiliar situations.

Use of the outdoors makes a major contribution to physical and environmental education and enhances many other curriculum areas. It contributes to personal growth and social awareness and develops skills for life and the world of work. Qualities such as a sense of responsibility and a purpose in life are nurtured. There is also a great deal of intrinsic enjoyment and satisfaction to be experienced from participation in outdoor activities.

Grade 5 Mt Rokko

Rokko-san YMCA

The grade 5 camp is a 3 day and 2 night program planned together with the outdoor education partner, Japan YMCA.

The focus of the program is to understand how participation in outdoor activities contributes to their own health and well-being. Students also develop skills and knowledge to participate safely in outdoor recreation activities

Over the course of the camp they cook meals, plan camp nights and participate in adventure and learning challenges to practice their developed skills.

Grade 6 Shukuko Marine Camp

Camp Anan, Shikoku

The grade 6 Shukuko Marine Camp is a 4 day, 3 night program planned together with outdoor education partner YMCA Japan. This expedition aims to further develop outdoor skills and knowledge to undertake more extended journeys in natural environments. Students will participate in activities that encourage the development of skills of interdependence within the group.

Camp Anan is situated in the beautiful seaside area of Shikoku where Students will participate in activities such as stand up, paddle boarding, sailing and kayaking as well as enjoying campfires, night walks and team building activities.

Grade 7 Wakasawan Outdoor Education camp

Wakasawan, Fukui

The grade 7 Wakasawan Outdoor Education camp is a 4 day, 3 night program planned together with outdoor education leaders from the Wakasa-wan Nature Study Lodge. This expedition further extends the students' skills and knowledge in the outdoor environment and aims to develop greater responsibility for self, as well as immerse themselves in the natural environments.

The Wakasawan Nature Study Lodge is a beach-front lodge and activity center that offers nature experiences filled with oceanic excitement, such as cutter boating, sea kayaking, and snorkeling.

Grade 8 Rafting Expedition

Yoshino River, Gojyo

The grade 8 Canoe Expedition is a 4 day, 3 night program planned together with outdoor education partner MontBell, Nara. This expedition further extends the students' skills and knowledge of outdoor expeditions and leadership in a natural environment.

The MontBell rafting expedition is used to challenge students as they raft in small groups on the Yoshino River. Students also participate in activities such as bike riding, hiking and visiting local hertiage sites. Students undergo preparatory skills training and planning exercises before the rafting journey.

Regular checks for weather and river levels are conducted by the expert raft guides and the program is adapted if necessary. The Yoshino River has many flat sections with grade 1 and 2 rapids making for an enjoyable yet challenging program.

Grade 9 Wakayama Hiking & Rafting Adventure

Kumano Kodo, Wakayama

The grade 9 Wakayama adventure, is a 4 day, 3 night program planned together with outdoor education partner Evergreen, Hakuba. This adventure aims to Explore more adventurous activities as a way of exploring self and nature, and the lessons that can be learned for everyday living. Students will travel to the UNESCO listed World Heritage area of the Kumano Nachi Taisha Shrine and waterfall, hike a section of the Kumano Kodo trail and raft the Kitayama River through Doryoko Gorge. The Kumano Kodo and Kumano and Kitayama rivers were used as pilgrimage routes for centuries. This trip is lead by experienced guides from Evergreen Outdoor Centre who will lead all activities and monitor weather and river conditions.

Grade 10 Shimanami Kaido Cycle Expedition

Shimanami Kaido, Hiroshima

The grade 10 Shimanami Kaido Cycle Expedition is a 4 day, 3 night program planned by the Canadian Academy Activities office and CA staff. This expedition requires students' to actively participate in the outdoors and learn more technical skills of adventurous journeys and manage the risks effectively. This diverse expedition allows students to enjoy the wonderful scenery and beautiful natural features of the Seto Inland Sea Shimanami Kaido.

Students ride in cyclist only areas traveling across the bridges from island to island.

Specific courses are planned for students in accordance with skill level.

Grade 11 Lake Biwa Canoe Expedition

Lake Biwa, Kyoto

The grade 11 Canoe Expedition is a 4 day, 3 night program planned together with outdoor education partner Evergreen, Hakuba. This expedition, further extends students' skills and knowledge of expeditions and self-reliant leadership after demonstrating appropriate planning and preparation.

The 4-day adventure uses canadian style kayaks to navigate throughout the waters around the northern end of lake Biwa. Qualified canoe instructors from Evergreen accompany all groups as well as Canadian Academy staff. This experience, can be challenging with students paddling each day and camping on lake edge each evening.

Grade 12 Kumano Kodo Pilgrimage hike

Nakahechi, Wakayama

The grade 12 Kumano Kodo Hiking Expedition, is a 4 day, 3 night program planned together with outdoor education partner Evergreen, Hakuba. This expedition further extends students' skills and knowledge of expeditions, cultural understanding and leadership.

The Kumano Kodo pilgrimage is a unique and rigorous lightweight hiking journey along one of the old pilgrimages that for over 1000 years people have used. Along the way students will have some fascinating insights into the world of Japan, the samurai urban and village life today. They will travel through rural Japan along some of the most enjoyable and best-preserved parts of the old pilgrimages in Japan’s mountainous central region. Students will stay in atmospheric and beautiful inns, taste a variety of Japanese dishes and experience the traditional Japanese way of life including sleeping on futons, bathing in wooden baths and eating while sitting on tatami mat floor.

Grade 6 Hachikita ski trip

Hachikogen, Hyogo prefecture

The Grade 6 ski trip is a 3 day, 2 night event in Hachikogen, Hyogo prefecture. The ski trip provides an opportunity for students to develop a range of personal and group skills in an environment which many students would otherwise not experience. The program takes advantage of learning in environments outside the school setting and has a focus on the nature and importance of human functioning.

Students travel up to the picturesque ski resort of Hachikogen by bus and depending on their ski/boarding ability, ski on the runs of both Hachikogen and Hachikita.

Transport, accomodation, meals ski/snowboard rental and lift pass is included in tuition. Students will be required to pay for ski lessons and the purchase of ski clothing and helmet.

Grade 7 Shizukuishi Ski trip

Shizukuishi, Iwate prefecture

The Grade 7 ski trip is a 3 day, 2 night event in Shizukuishi, Iwate prefecture. The ski trip provides an opportunity for students to continue to develop a range of personal and group skills in an environment which many students would otherwise not experience. This trip enables the students to focus on their relationship with their peers and teachers. Students travel up to the scenic ski resort of Shizukuishi by plane and bus.

Transport, accomodation, meals ski/snowboard rental and lift pass is included in tuition. Students will be required to pay for ski lessons and the purchase of ski clothing and helmet.

Grade 8 Mount Appi Ski trip

Mount Appi, Iwate prefecture

The Grade 8 ski trip is a 3 day, 2 night event on Mount Appi, Iwate prefecture. The ski trip provides an opportunity for students to continue to develop a range of personal and group skills in an environment which many students would otherwise not experience. Students learn about and develop the knowledge and skills needed to function effectively in group situations. Students travel up to the magnificent ski resort of Appi Kogen by plane and bus.

Transport, accomodation, meals ski/snowboard rental and lift pass is included in tuition. Students will be required to pay for ski lessons and the purchase of ski clothing and helmet.
